Ian Chappell

Ian graduated from Lancashire Polytechnic in 1990 with an Honours degree in Law. He trained at Parfitt Cresswell Carnt & Mudie and qualified in 1994. Ian was a Partner at Hextalls before joining Davenport Lyons as a Partner in 2009.

Ian’s practice focuses on a broad range of contentious property and construction matters, which include disputes before the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal, Lands Tribunal and Technology and Construction Court.

Recent experience includes:

  • Successfully defending a claim in the High Court for the return of a substantial deposit under section 49 of the Law of property Act 1925.  This case was widely reported in virtually all legal weeklies and property/construction publications: Chief Aribisala v St James Group Limited;
  • Issuing large numbers of claims in the High Court for specific performance and damages for breaches of contract arising out of the purchase of plots in various large developments in and around London, the south and the south east;
  • Defending proceedings brought in the LVT concerning the interpretation of Estate and Service Charge provisions in the leases and transfers of a prominent and substantial south coast development;
  • Advising on the construction of service charge provisions and the recovery of service charge voids in respect of a substantial development in South West London;
  • Advising a developer client on the ramifications and strategy in renegotiating sale contracts following exchange on a multi million pound development in London;
  • Advising and taking action against a roofing contractor for the supply and fit of defective roof tiles for a large development in Kent involving over 180 properties.

Ian enjoys squash and other sports, fishing, good food and fine wine.
