Jim Dennis

Jim graduated from University College, London in 1990 with an Honours degree in English Literature. He trained at Hogan Lovells and qualified in 1997. Jim was an associate in Field Fisher Waterhouse’s IP team before joining Davenport Lyons as a Partner in 2010.

Jim’s practice covers all areas of IP, both commercial and litigious. He has particular expertise in trade marks, copyright and designs. Jim is very active in national and international trade mark prosecution, and recently completed the registration of a famous London building as a UK and Community trade mark. Jim is also highly experienced in conducting trade mark oppositions before the UKIPO and OHIM.

Jim is also experienced in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements involving IP rights, such as trade mark and copyright acquisitions and licences and assignments. Jim recently advised a leading Premiership footballer on an image rights deal with his club.

In addition, Jim is a highly experienced litigator in IP, IT and commercial matters. Jim’s recent contentious experience includes:

  • Boxing Brands v Sports Direct – trade mark injunction (High Court) and multiple proceedings (UKIPO and OHIM)
  • Shebang v Google - trade mark oppositions (UKIPO/OHIM)   
  • Tullett Prebon v BGC Partners - confidential information (High Court)
  • Ordnance Survey v The Automobile Association - copyright (High Court)
  • Scansafe v MessageLabs - passing off (High Court)
  • Nikken v Pioneer - patents (Court of Appeal)
  • Cabletel Surrey & Hampshire v Brookwood Cemetery – operator’s rights under the Telecommunications Code (Court of Appeal)
  • IBS v APM Technologies - copyright and contractual rights in software

Jim is recommended as a leading IP practitioner in both the Chambers Directory and Legal 500. He has authored numerous articles on intellectual property in leading publications such as European Intellectual Property Review and In-house Lawyer. He is a member of INTA and the Society for Computers and Law.
