Matthew
qualified in 2003 and became an associate in July 2007
in the Contentious Rights and Dispute Resolution Department,
representing clients in commercial litigation, media
and sports litigation and defamation matters.
Matthew has worked on a number of high profile libel cases
including Condliffe -v- Private Eye, Jimmy Nail -v-MGN, Michael
Jackson -v- MGN, Tim Blackstone -v- MGN and White -v- Express
Newspapers. Matthew recently acted for a member of a foreign
Royal Family in a high-profile breach of confidence, fraud
and money-tracing claim. He is also currently acting for presenter
and model Tara Palmer Tomkinson in a claim against her former
agent and management company and BBC TV presenter Konnie Huq
in a claim brought against her by a leading estate agency.
Matthew is also a member of the firm's Sports Group and
acts for a number of the firm's sports clients, including
leading sports agency Octagon and its Sports Marketing
and Athlete Representation divisions. Matthew has also advised
English National Hockey and a leading Rugby League club
on foreign player transfer issues following the landmark Kolpak
judgment. He also acted for former WBO World Heavyweight
Champion Henry Akinwande in a claim brought against him by
his former manager.
Matthew was also part of the team that
successfully acted for the musician Bobby Valentino in Beckingham
-v- Hodgens & Others
in 2002, as a result of which Mr Valentino was recognised
as being the composer of the well-known violin-riff on
the Bluebells' number 1 single "Young at Heart".
In addition, Matthew has acted for a number of the firm's
film production clients in general media litigation and
commercial disputes including L.A based Seven Arts Pictures,
the producers of "Stander" and Gold Circle Films,
the producers of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "White
Noise".
