| Robin
qualified in 1983 at Wright Webb Syrett and became
a partner at Davenport Lyons when the two firms merged
in 1995. Since qualifying Robin has specialized in
media related litigation. In recent years his practice
has been almost exclusively for defendants and he
has spends a significant amount of his time undertaking
pre-publication work.
Robin has conducted the defence of numerous libel
claims on behalf of Mirror Group Newspapers Private
Eye and other publishers. He has also extensive experience
advising about and dealing with claims involving privacy
issues and contempt of court, including the leading
case of Attorney-General v MGN Ltd & ors (the
Geoffrey Knights case). In addition over the years
Robin has acted for numerous claimants in libel actions
against the Press and other publishers.
Robin advises Private Eye about every issue before
it goes to publication and handles all claims that
the magazine receives. He regularly advises Penguin
about proposed books. Other book publishers for whom
Robin has acted are Harper Collins, Bloomsbury and
Mainstream Publishing.
In appropriate cases he has taken specific steps to
prepare publishers to defend potential urgent applications
for injunctions to prevent publication of books and
newspaper stories and has extensive experience of
both bringing and defending such applications.
Robin also has extensive experience of bringing and
defending commercial claims involving contracts, copyright,
breach of confidence and other intellectual property
rights in the High Court involving media clients.
These have included book and magazine publishers,
film, television and record producers, artists’
agents, writers directors and actors. Many of the
cases in which he has been involved have been reported.
