About Us
Trevor Sears qualified as a solicitor in 1972. Articled at the leading insolvency firm of Booth and Blackwell, he went on to become their Senior Partner from 1991-1997, when he merged his firm, leaving to join Davenport Lyons as a partner in 2001.

Trevor is a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner and a Fellow of R3. He also acts as UK Counsel to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Apart from an extensive general insolvency practice, his specialist practice is within the fields of both Insolvency and Airline agent relationships, with the two specialisations often overlapping. He has acted in many high profile cases including:
  • Representing British Airways and 30 other airlines against a large travel group achieving recoveries for the airlines.
  • Representing British Airways against Robert Maxwell in which the airline successfully sued and recovered damages from the defendant after a contested High Court action.
  • Representing IATA member airlines against major clearing banks over the liability of a bank to account for trust monies.
  • Bringing claims for IATA airlines against directors of failed travel agencies under novel principles of trust law holding directors personally liable for breaches of trust committed by their companies.
  • Advising the Department of Official Receivers in director disqualification proceedings, and the appointment of Provisional Liquidators to suspect financial services companies.
  • Representing the IATA member airlines in cases of fraud committed by travel companies, including working alongside the Fraud Squad and safeguarding the proceeds of the crimes in international jurisdictions.
  • Representing ABTA in high profile fraud claims within the travel industry.
  • Representing IATA in relation to the failures of international airlines.
  • Acting in a broad variety of high profile bankruptcy matters, including Penguin Books -v- David Irving.
Trevor advises on all types of financial restructuring and credit collection problems for a variety of well-known organisations.

He lectures to members of the Institute of Credit Management, and to firms of accountants on travel insolvency. He is regularly asked to comment on television and radio discussions.

Trevor is the author of the chapter entitled "Travel Insolvency" in Tolley's Insolvency Law, a leading text on insolvency.
