Davenport Lyons Unveils ‘The Look & The Law: Part 3’
13 Sep 2011
Specialist law firm Davenport Lyons has today unveiled the third edition of its The Look & The Law booklet, offering valuable legal and business advice to budding fashion designers.
The Look & The Law series of books has been created by Davenport Lyons as part of its on-going partnership with Fashion Fringe. The cornerstone of this partnership is a valuable mentoring programme provided to Fashion Fringe designers each year, providing practical advice from legal experts on everything from setting up a fashion business to the ethics of sampling and production, and protecting intellectual property.
This year’s The Look & The Law, the third in the series, focuses on selling a fashion business and the stages that a young designer will need to go through to complete a successful sale.
It goes on to provide advice about other areas to take into account during a sale including what happens to the staff and how a designer’s name can be protected.
Finally, it addresses the thorny issue of what a designer needs to consider should a much needed investment not materialise.
The new edition includes case studies from top designers Anya Hindmarch and Roland Mouret who offer insider advice and practical information on how they have built their names into successful fashion businesses.
Adam Glass, Partner and Head of Brands at Davenport Lyons, said “London continues to be a hub for young designers starting out in the fashion industry but now more than ever they need business ‘nous’ as well as their design credentials to survive and thrive.
Our third edition of The Look and The Law provides considered, common sense advice to guide young designers facing an uncertain future to help ensure they make the best decisions for themselves and their businesses.”
Fashion Fringe, now in its eighth year, was set up by Colin McDowell and IMG Fashion, to help find and support new fashion talent, with the aim of creating fashion businesses with longevity. It distinguishes itself from other fashion competitions by offering an extensive mentoring scheme that sets the three finalists in good stead to establish a solid fashion business.
Davenport Lyons mentors each year’s finalists on the legalities of setting up a business and educates the designers on the intricacies of being a start-up label, covering fundamental considerations which many will never have had to address before.
Harold Tillman, Chairman of the British Fashion Council, commented “There is something both compelling and absorbing about working in the world of fashion, but it is one of the hardest career paths you could ever choose.
“Through my work with the British Fashion Council I can see first-hand the contribution young designers make to the power and appeal of fashion. But I also see the difficulties that face them.
“We have to support our young talent, mentoring and nurturing them, as they are the lifeblood of our wonderful industry. Fashion Fringe, with the valuable support of Davenport Lyons, does just this, opening up the future for the stars of tomorrow and giving so much to our designers and to British fashion.”
